A Personal Favourite (for Good Reason)
I’ll say it straight away. This is one of my favourite places to eat. Not in a casual “oh, it’s nice” kind of way. In a I think about it, I crave it, I plan my whole day around it kind of way.
You walk into Bouchon Bistrot and, yes, there’s a warm welcome, the kind that instantly puts you at ease, but if I’m honest, it’s the thought of what’s coming that takes over.
Because the food here… is something else.
The Food, The Wine… The Whole Thing
This is proper French cooking, rich, rustic, and not even slightly apologetic about it.
Butter is used how butter should be used. Sauces are allowed to be sauces. Time is given where time is needed. And you can taste every bit of that.
A cheese soufflé arrives risen and golden (and yes, there’s always that quiet moment of anticipation - it delivers). An assiette de charcuterie, layered with saucisson, rillons, rillettes and cured ham, lands like something meant to be shared, picked at, and properly enjoyed. And then the confit duck, tender, slow, falling away, with gratin dauphinois that leans fully into cream, garlic and comfort, and a red wine jus that you’ll find yourself chasing around the plate without even pretending otherwise.
You tell yourself you’ll be restrained. You won’t be.
And then the wine comes in, and this is where it all really settles in. A glass turns into another. You start pairing without meaning to. The table fills, the conversation slows, and suddenly you’re completely in it, in that perfect rhythm of eating, sipping, pausing, and going again.
It’s indulgent, but not overwhelming. Considered, but never overworked. Just exactly what you want it to be.
In the Heart of Hexham
Set right in the heart of Hexham, Bouchon Bistrot feels like it belongs exactly where it is.
Housed in a beautiful old stone building, with a French flag gently swinging outside, it catches your eye before you even step in, quietly confident, full of character, and just as lovely from the outside as it is within.
Hexham itself has that same easy charm to it. The kind of place you wander rather than rush, where time seems to stretch a little without you noticing. And Bouchon fits straight into that rhythm. You step inside, settle in, and almost instinctively slow down.
Inside, there are a few different spaces to choose from, each with their own feel, but all tied together by that same warmth, soft lighting, a gentle hum of conversation, the sense that people are here to enjoy themselves and take their time.
And then, if you’re lucky with the weather, the terrace draws you out just a little further. A bit of light, a bit of air, a glass in hand… and suddenly there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.
A Reputation That Makes Sense
Bouchon has a way of finding its way onto people’s lists of favourite places, and along the way, it’s picked up awards that reflect exactly that. You go once, and that’s usually it. It becomes somewhere you return to, recommend, and quietly hope you can get a table at again.
Why I Keep Going Back?
It’s never just one thing.
It’s not just the food (although it easily could be). It’s not just the wine (also a strong argument). It’s not even just the atmosphere. It’s the way it all comes together, every time, without trying too hard, without missing a beat.
And that’s what keeps pulling you back.
À bientôt.
